Depression - Only fight , No fright
We all have heard about this term called " depression" , nowadays its so common to hear it that sometimes it confuses us whether it is for real or not. People get depressed out of anything in life. This blog hopefully will help the readers to know exactly what can be called a depression & what can be done to overcome it.
Introduction
Depression is a mental condition where a person may experience lack of confidence, self belief, motivation & desire to continue their path of life. In severe cases it may lead to psychological disorders like nervous breakdown, schizophrenia , anorexia & bulimia.
Depression can be a consequence of constant adversities hitting a person hard enough to not give him/her any hope to recover from the losses they are going through. The mental strength & the surroundings play a huge role in determining the severity of depression a person may face.
Just like every other result depression also has many causes, factors responsible for it. What are they ? Lets take a look
The Cause
The main cause of depression is the person itself. Everything starts & ends with you. I know there are so many things which are out of our control & we have to face them no matter how harsh they are, but that alongwith bad lifestyle, negative approach towards life, anti socialism etc adds upto increasing the probability of depression in people.
The person with a positive mindset is less likely to get depressed than a person who always has something to moan about. Although there are other causes which play key role in depression
• Surroundings
The surroundings always impact our persona, they decide our behaviour, the subtleties in our approach towards life, the perspective towards looking at things & much more. Nowadays its becoming tougher & tougher to find healthy surroundings. People experience toxic work cultures, familiar upsets, children coming from broken homes, women facing harassments all these pile up to give the result in the form of depression.
• Remedy
Though we can't completely change our surroundings we can still find positivity within ourselves to keep our mindset as clear & as healthy as possible. Choosing our company is always in our control, be wise with your decision when you socialise with people around you. Everyone has a sense when some person isn't right for them , once you realise that don't convince yourself to continue your relations with them, stay away ; you may come across as rude or arrogant but in the end you know you are doing it for your own best interest.
Another remedy to overcome this problem is that people aren't the only part of your surroundings, nature plays a huge role & if you are a nature lover you probably won't need people around you as desperately as others. If you enjoy walking or running through lush green meadows, looking at birds, love animals its the best way you gonna improve your mental health. So inculcate some love for nature in yourself ,its truly beautiful.
• Diet
Now diet possibly doesn't come to our minds when we talk of depression but trust me the food you eat is hugely responsible for your mental health. Having a healthy diet is very crucial to maintain not only good physical but also psychological health. There are certain foods like chcocolate, ice cream which do uplift your mood not just because they taste good but because they act on your brain in certain way to produce feel good hormones.
Food with rich source of anti oxidants like strawberries, grapes, blueberries ,cherries etc reduce stress levels & make you feel better. As far as drinks are concerned having a party once in a blue moon does no harm , but excessive is surely gonna cause problems. Instead opt for a cup of coffee or green tea that will surely do you more good than bad.
A diet doesn't have to be equivalent to starvation, all it needs to be is moderation. Eat everything you want but in just the right proportion , you will be free to indulge & yet stay fit.
• Yourself
Man can be his own best friend & own worst enemy , choice is yours what you want to be. To keep depression at bay own worst enemy is definitely a big no no. You cannot keep others happy if you are not happy yourself. Have hobbies other than your profession, pursue them actively , give yourself quality time, never stop loving yourself only then you can love others.
There are many things we face in life which are harsh on us but believe me dusting them off is easier than coming out of disgust or negativity that you have for yourself.
In order to challenge yourself you have to put some pressure, demands & expectations on you but that must not turn into cruelty which leads to spoiling your mental health.
• The Balance
Life is all about balance, finding it & then maintaining it. The latter is harder but not impossible. In order to keep depression out of our lives we need to adapt to the changes going around us as quickly as possible, we should learn to enjoy them, learn to find out positives from everything in life. I know this sounds cliched & also philosophical even stupid at times but it is achieveable & once you get it you will enjoy life.
Find ways to balance your life, prioritise your tasks in such a way that you can alot ample if not equal time to everything you love to do. Be stringent about this schedule & try to maintain it as much as possible. Keeping yourself creatively & productively busy is key to keeping depression out of the way.
Challenge yourself with new things to do, be insatiably hungry to learn anything that you enjoy & is new to you, develop multiple interests that way you can always have options for yourself , it also improves your overall personality.
• The Solution
• Medical - Sometimes things aren't easy to handle, & you need a help from someone who has technical expertise in the field. Don't ignore any warning signs that you get from your body & mind. If you need medical help for depression do not hesitate for a second to get it. Depression doesn't mean you are a lunatic , you just need to get some perspective on things in your life. Psychologists, Family doctors , counsellors are always ready for helping you. They are out there to serve you, seek help , don't be ashamed
.
• Non - medical - The best way to prevent depression is communication. Talk, speak out your heart to someone whom you are completely comfortable with. Problems divide when you share them. You may not always end up with finding a solution but you will surely reduce a burden that you were carrying for a long time, sometimes thats the only thing you need. So never underestimate the strength of communication.

• Spending time with your loved ones, socialising with people reduces if the person is depressed, no matter how bad you feel never cut yourself off from people especially your own circle , you may fight with them but atleast your emotions will get a way out & you will feel better. Please socialise & spend time with your beloved people it will surely help you.
• Never ever underestimate physical contact. Hugging , cuddling & snuggling with a beloved does more good to you than you can ever imagine. If you had a bad day come home & give an enormous hug to any member of your family you are closest to , the difference is for you to experience. If you are a parent, live entertainment is always on in the house & there is no chance that you won't be smiling after seeing a 2 yr old face giggling at your entry.
• Learn to enjoy simple pleasures in life. Life is in little moments that give you the greatest joy , cherish all the memories, look back on them more than often, time will fly & you will find life is truly a blessing.
