Interview with the Vampire - Haunting Charm
The 1994 movie based on novel written by Ms. Anne Rice & Directed by Mr. Neil Jordan perfectly managed to haunt & charm us at the same time by giving us a peek into what goes in the life of a vampire wonderfully played by Mr. Tom Cruise ( Lestat ) , Mr. Brad Pitt ( Louis ) & Ms. Kirsten Dunst ( Claudia ) in lead roles.
In this blog I would emphasize about the haunting charm played brilliantly by 3 characters in the lead role which the movie maintains throughout its duration.
The Aura
The haunting experience in the movie is mainly because of the aura created in it, right from the start every frame is unpredictable & the constant thought of what will happen next keeps us hooked to the screen.
The movie is an emotional journey so alongwith making us feel empathetic about the characters it haunts us due to their presence on screen.
The character of Louis takes us in whole new world which is completely terrifying yet very mystical. It is creepy yet attractive all at the same time.
This aura stays during the entire film which makes it even more interesting.
Slice of life story
Another attraction in the film is it feeds the curiosity of imaginative powers of the viewers, this is achieved by phenomenal writing of slice of life story narrated by Louis.
Louis takes us on an adventure he has been through & makes us believe of his existence in this world, he also makes us feel empathetic for him & for what has happened to him, the more he tells us about his past the more we are tempted to fantasise about the life of vampires.
Louis' character makes us forget that he is not like us rather we find him & other vampires much more relatable to human beings, their desires ,wishes & emotions feel no different to that of a human , thats why we readily accept them as one among us.
As we learn more about Louis' life as vampire we also connect with him emotionally , we connect to the vampires around him, Lestat & Claudia being the most outstanding amongst all.
Lestat - The Charmer
Both the vampires in the movie Lestat & Louis are equally charming but Lestat has something extra than Louis as far as charm is concerned. He really takes all the pride in being a ferrocious killer with good looks!
Lestat's character is contrast of Louis , he is not vulnerable like Louis, he is bright , powerful, stealthy, cunning & wicked minded vampire who defines dark side of the story.
His way of loving & showing love is very different to that of Louis, Lestat no longer possesses the human side within him & thats why he constantly tries to convince Louis to use the charm for luring the prey in instead of feeling sorry for them. According to Lestat, turning Louis into vampire is the best gift he has given to anyone, to escape from pain, death & burdensome life.
Lestat's very charm also lies in the dark humour he portrays across the film, death, sorrows, sympathy are of no value to him, he looks at it as a joke & enjoys the very pleasure of killing people to feed on them. Lestat is also shown as someone who loves class, poise , elegance & grace these qualities only add more to his charming appearance.
He is scary but also too irresistible , & he knows this, Lestat's power to tap into his prey's psyche makes him unique & fascinating , it makes us explore him more & more.
Louis - The Emotion
The character of Louis is a blend of human soul trapped in a vampire. Louis is vampire in appearance but the humanity in him almost never seems to die throughout the movie. He feels more & more relatable as the movie progresses to a point where we forget that is a vampire.
Louis' character displays purity of soul which has no boundaries & unconditional love, he portrays helplessness, vulnerability, kindness, empathy, fear all the emotions that a vampire should not have. He is totally opposite to Lestat, that makes him charming in his own way. Louis is also someone who is very deep to understand , antagonistic to what a vampire must be.
The entire emotional aspect of the movie is represented by Louis.
Claudia - The Innocent Trap
Claudia's character displays the suffocation & downside of being a vampire, the power of being eternally youthful which may seem like a blessing is the only irony & tragic reality of vampire's life.
Claudia is a little girl but as time passes the world around her changes & so do her desires , she wishes to change too but the realisation of the fact that being a vampire she will remain like a child physically for eternity suffocates her.
She is essentially a woman trapped inside a child's body & so are her feelings. She display's the struggle of not being able to change herself on the outside & yet unable to control whats happening with her on the emotional level. Her character portrays the rage, rebel & fury of being subjected to this dark fate.
Claudia searches for escape throughout the movie & is not afraid to voice out & question the deeds done to her. She is strong , brave character who demands the truth & not settle for whats given to her. She is also someone who tells Louis that seeking revenge for the right cause is not evil & makes him support her in taking the action. Also she is the one who make Louis understand that moving on from the past is part of life & not to dwell on sorrows but to learn from them is very important.
