Vanilla Sky : Perspective of life

We have all watched vanilla sky a great movie by Mr. Cameron Crowe with equally great acting from Mr Tom Cruise, Ms Cameron Diaz, Ms Penelope Cruz , Mr Kurt Russel & many more.

The movie as we all know is an adaptation of the Spanish movie Open your eyes directed by Alejandro Amenabar. 

The adaptation by Mr Crowe is of course a phenomenal piece of writing with his own personal touch.

This blog explores how vanilla sky gives us new perspective towards life.

The Journey of David Aames

David Aames is a very relatable character which we all have met in our lives at some point of time, we all know atleast one person who doesn't care about the consequences of his / her behaviour occuring in people's lives who are associated with them.

He has everything he wants money, name, good lifestyle, luxury pleasures but still his life has a void which is like a missing jigsaw puzzle piece , a small thing but makes a huge difference ! That void is true love, the honesty, the genuineness , dignity towards others ,their emotions & feelings for you.

Unless one has these qualities no matter how wealthy you are life won't have any essence in it.

The Dreams

David Aames is constantly into this world of dreams to an extent where he can't distinguish between reality & dream.

Normally dreams are result of unfulfilled desires, complete fantasy , unspoken thoughts & unspoken fears. David's dreams being all of this are also his unconfessed guilt which he has in his mind due to what happened with Julianna Gianni ( Julie ) 

Julie dies because of him & this thing eats him from within because he never managed to speak with Julie & got to know her true love for him neither he had time to genuinely appologize to her for his mistakes.

Sophia : The Reality

Sophia represents reality in the movie, the reality of life she is true, genuine, appealing, pure hearted girl. Its very hard not to fall for sophia as she is all that a man wants in a woman.

David is struck by her & also by reality of life the moment he meets sophia he finds that one missing piece in jigsaw puzzle which completes the picture but only later that he realizes that reality is much harder & bitter to face than dreams.

In dreams sophia loves him to death & they are soulmates but in reality David is just an acquaintance for Sophia. When he comes face to face with this truth the rage, anger & fury inside him causes him to dream about accidentally killing sophia.

The Accident : Mirror by life

The accident of David in the movie is the mirror shown to him by the life. He treats people the way he wants to, taking them for granted & not caring about the effects of his behaviour on them.

Post his accident & destructuring of his face people's behaviour towards him changes in similar way, those people who were once charmed by him & were ready to do anything to get his attention now don't even think of how he will feel about the way they treat him.

David gets back what he gives! 

The Prison & Psychiatrist : Punishment & Self Reflection

David is shown in prison in most of the movie with a psychiatrist who asks him to recall the incidences in his life & dive into the past over & over again to find the clues to prove his innocence in Sophia's murder case.

Here there are 2 things which symbolise the life :

The prison

The prison is the punishment, the guilt that David feels within him for the way he conducts his life, he is rather ashamed & embarassed about the mistakes he makes in his life which cost him alot personally & professionally.

The psychiatrist

The psychiatrist is the guiding figure who helps David to self reflect & analyse the mistakes he made in his life also how he can overcome them if he takes efforts. Psychiatrist is also percieved as a father figure by David , being alone he misses that guidance on life a father gives to his son when he finds himself in confusion or dilemma. 

Five basic emotions

The psychiatrist talks about 5 basic emotions a man has namely guilt, shame, anger, fear & love 

David's life is a journey revolving around all these emotions & they are very much the essence of life

He has fear of heights & being alone

He loves sophia & Julie is in love with him

He has the guilt of killing sophia & treating Julie badly

He feels shame for his destructured face & hides it in a mask

He is angry because he finds himself helpless to change the conditions in his life.

Life Extension : A second chance

Life extension is nothing but a perspective of second chance life gives us or we can give to ourselves to rectify our mistakes.

David is told that he can control anything in his life by the tech support man in the bar 

He essentially means that David can give himself a second chance to rectify his mistakes & start a life from a new point.

Tech support guy also tells him that little things matter , David almost never pays attention to little things in his life , he misses the signals given by Julie to him about her love, he fails to realise that sophia is an acquaintance , he fails to realise the true friendship by Brian 

These all things really make a huge contribution to one's life & thats why they matter the most.

To change the conditions one has to take efforts & it can be done by overcoming your fears thats why David jumps off the roof facing, overcoming his fear of heights & taking a leap of faith to give life a new start.

What I learnt ?

1. Never take people in your life for granted, never treat anyone without thinking about the effects of your behaviour on their lives.

2. Cherish true friendships, true love to the fullest. Pay attention to them , listen to them when they pour their heart out to you.

3. Have the courage & will to face your fears 

4. Don't let anyone else control your life you are incharge & keep it that way.

5. Accept your mistakes, take responsibility & be accountable of what you do & say 

6. Act on your mistakes, learn from them, move on & don't ever repeat them

7. Life always gives you a second chance & so can you give yourself one make full use of it to turn your life into something fruitful.
