Work Life Balance
All of us work, we work to have desired life ; the one which we constantly chase where almost exists an ideal universe. Amongst all this somewhere lies a key piece which keeps the jigsaw puzzle in place, that is work life balance. But this blog is with a twist.
Introduction
What comes to mind when we say work life balance is handling professional & personal aspects of life with as much ease as possible, however what I feel work life balance is handling your professional life with as much ease as possible. Now this seems very blinkered perspective but if you think carefully it makes sense.
Work Life
Work life constitutes our work place, colleagues, the job we do & the returns we recieve for doing it; both tangible & intangible. There are many more challenges in work life as compared to personal life, also a missed step in personal life may not cause as severe ramifications as it may in professional life. To me work life throws 4 major challenges at you.
Stress of achivement
Jobs are highly competitive, you are always in a race, many a times against yourself, you strive for constant improvement & this is exhausting when done day in day out. To balance this aspect of work life , few key steps can be useful
- Set daily targets instead of annual targets.
- Focus on today, neither yesterday nor tomorrow are helpful.
- Atleast have one colleague who ends up being your support system, if not share your emotions with someone in your family & friends.
- Don't panic, you might end up taking gambles & risks which are a part of achieving something as long as its for the right reasons do not fuss about the outcome. Just stick to the process.
Workplace Vibe
There is a dash of luck involved in how good your workplace vibes are, no matter how good of a bunch you work with an inevitable net of gossips, politics, rumours, jealousy lies everywhere in each organization, one has to learn to accept it as part & parcel of life as well as to thread through it & beat the system.
Never let workplace vibe cost you these things mentioned below
- Loss of your mental peace
- Bonding between you & your colleagues
- Your motivation to work everyday for your personal growth.
- Your desire to keep striving to contribute your best for the organization.
The tight rope
By far the toughest hurdle to overcome is the tight rope between maintaining your self image & at the same time beating the system with its flaws. This is where attrition rate is highest, many people find this increasingly difficult to cope with such stress because it pulls you & pushes you at the same time, even the most seasoned pros may struggle in this area; however there are ways to tackle this problem as well.
- Plan: plan to fail, plan to succeed, plan for redundancies. Its the only way to have multiple tools in case they are needed.
- Decision : Improve your decision making skills, if you are a good planner you are mostly a good decision maker too. If still there are issues take time to process each step & reach the conclusion.
- Build Situational awareness : Keep your eyes & ears open, you must be aware of what is going on around you & about you inside the workplace. This will help you to take necessary steps in order to promote or defend yourself in respective situations.
- Know yourself inside out : When you know yourself in terms of your capability, merit & identity you need not bother come what may. It is imperative to know your strengths but also to acknowledge your flaws openly & not shove them under the carpet.
The clash
When a mix of personalities come together arguements, disagreements are bound to happen, there will be a day or days where things will go south even with your best mates & here is where application of all of the above will come into play. The better you are at it easier it gets to dissipate such unwanted crises.
Final word
This blog comes from a very personal space, I am just getting my feet wet at the work culture & its already shown me quite the spectrum, not a single day has been the same, its a roller coaster ride to say the least, but through it all I am learning, every day as well as my past experiences are helping me too to thrive as a person.
This blog goes out to some of my wonderful colleagues who have made & do make work place & work a bliss. I am grateful for their presence in my life & never take it for granted.
Its a long way to go, I hope this blog helps you all in some way.
Do share it with your friends who have just started their professional journey.
Let me know in comments what you feel about my words.
